Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training Program

making yoga accessible to people with limited mobility

Schaff Yoga Therapy’s Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training provides yoga instructors with a solid foundation to adapt classic yoga postures for students who are limited in movement because of age, illness, disability, or injury.  We use chairs, the wall, straps, blankets, blocks, and gentle assists. This program is recognized by the national Arthritis Foundation as a treatment modality.

This course prepares you to:

  • Understand basic anatomy and physiology as it relates to specific medical conditions.
  • Modify classic yoga postures for people with physical impairments, ranging from neurological conditions (such as Parkinson’s and strokes) to arthritis, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis and other back conditions.
  • Use breathing exercises and meditations to deepen your students’ experience.
  • Structure classes so that students of any age, shape, size, ability, or disability may be able to participate and enjoy the yoga experience safely and comfortably.

Goals: At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Guide people living with physical limitations confidently and compassionately through a yoga experience that is both safe and satisfying.
  • Be prepared to teach yoga in a variety of settings including independent and assisted-living facilities, nursing homes and hospitals.

This training program is appropriate for yoga teachers, physical and occupational therapists, nurses, and physicians, and for those interested in deepening their own personal practice. CEUs are available for nurses.  Upon completion, certification is available for experienced 200+ certified yoga teachers.

Our next Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training Program will take place at Kripalu Center For Yoga & Health in August, from the 5th to the 10th. Space is limited to 24 participants. You will be able to sign up for this training program on Kripalu's website within the next month or two.

  • Google Calendar ICS

Schaff Yoga Therapy’s 40-hour Warm Water Yoga Training Program is registered with International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) and is recognized by the Arthritis Foundation as a recommended therapeutic modality. It takes place in Rhinebeck, New York from November 2nd – November 9th. Space is limited to 12 participants. This is the only Warm Water Yoga Teacher Training Program we are offering this year.

Led by IAYT Certified Yoga Therapist Terry Roth Schaff, this training program teaches you how to make yoga accessible to people with physical and neurological conditions. It is designed to help improve balance, range of motion, coordination and mobility while cultivating a peaceful state of mind. You learn yoga poses and sequences in the water that increase cardio-vascular circulation, open up restricted joints, stretch tight muscles and strengthen weak ones, and breath work and relaxation exercises to soothe the nervous system, while helping the participants to feel grounded, rejuvenated, and refreshed. Terry takes you through the steps of setting up a Warm Water Yoga program in your community.

Becoming a certified Warm Water Yoga instructor gives you the opportunity to teach yoga to people who may no longer be able to have an active yoga practice on land, and to people with special needs, in a safe and supportive environment.

For certification you must already hold a 200-hour certification as a yoga instructor, with a minimum of three years teaching experience and at least 450 yoga teaching hours. We also ask that you have completed CPR within the last 12 months and be a confident and experienced swimmer. Special permission to participate in this program may be given on an individual basis to medical professionals and individuals with a serious interest in developing a water yoga practice.

Please let us know if there is any further information that we can provide you about our Warm Water Yoga Teacher Training Program.

Workshop Payment & Refund Policy

Tuition for the program is $2,000; this includes a total of 40 hours of training - 22 hours in the water and 18 hours in the classroom. You receive a copy of our Warm Water Yoga Training Manual. Lunches and snacks will be provided but you need to arrange for your lodging and additional meals.

Your place will be confirmed upon payment in full. We ask for payment for this program by certified check or money order. Please make it payable to Schaff Yoga Therapy and send it to:

Schaff Yoga Therapy
