 Successful completion of this weekend training program prepares you to teach three series of yoga postures that they can be safely shared in a variety of settings including independent and assisted living communities, nursing homes and hospitals.

5-Day (Sunday – Friday) Adaptive Yoga Training Program (22.75 hours) May 31 - June 5, 2020 - POSTPONED Learn seated and standing sequences for spine and hip conditions.

This course prepares you to: ·      Understand basic anatomy and physiology as they relate to specific musculoskeletal and neurological conditions affecting the spine and hip.

·      Modify yoga postures for people with physical impairments affecting stability, balance, strength, flexibility and range of motion

·      Structure classes so that students with medical issues can participate and enjoy their yoga experience safely and comfortably

·      Understand the impact and safely teach students with co-morbidities

 Successful completion of this 22.75-hour training program prepares you to teach yoga in a variety of settings including independent and assisted living communities, nursing homes and hospitals.

 Note: Tuition includes training manuals, and Terry Roth Schaff’s Chair-Supported Yoga DVD

Warm Water Yoga Weekend

Free yourself from pain and stiffness in the warm and supporting environment of water. When you practice yoga in warm water, you can reduce swelling in injured or swollen joints and avoid soreness.

  • Enjoy moving in a warm water pool. Supported by the water, you will find yourself able to flow from one yoga pose to another without the risk of falling.

  • Use the water to help expand your breath and lower your blood pressure

Warm Water Yoga Teacher Training Certification

Schaff Yoga Therapy’s 40-hour Warm Water Yoga Training Program is recognized by the Arthritis Foundation and by the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) as a recommended therapeutic modality. It takes place in Rhinebeck, New York. This certified training program gives yoga therapists and yoga teachers 40-hours of continuing education credits. Space is limited to 12 participants. Due to the Coronavirus our Warm Water Yoga Teacher Training Program has been postponed until later in the year.

Led by IAYT Certified Yoga Therapist Terry Roth Schaff and E-RYT Karen Abramson, this training program teaches you how to make yoga accessible to people with physical and neurological conditions. It is designed to help improve balance, range of motion, coordination and mobility while cultivating a peaceful state of mind. You learn yoga poses and sequences in the water that increase cardio-vascular circulation, open up restricted joints, stretch tight muscles and strengthen weak ones, and breath work and relaxation exercises to soothe the nervous system, while helping the participants to feel grounded, rejuvenated, and refreshed. Terry takes you through the steps of setting up a Warm Water Yoga program in your community.

Becoming a certified Warm Water Yoga instructor gives you the opportunity to teach yoga to people who may no longer be able to have an active yoga practice on land, and to people with special needs, in a safe and supportive environment.

For certification you must already hold a 200-hour certification as a yoga instructor. Special permission to participate in this program may be given on an individual basis to medical professionals and individuals with a serious interest in developing a water yoga practice.

Yoga For Hip & Knee Replacements

 If a hip or knee replacement is in your future, learn how you can not only postpone the inevitable, but also how to prepare your body for a speedy recovery. Medical yoga therapist Terry Roth Schaff and yoga teacher Karen Abramson will teach you a series of safe, easy to practice yoga poses to relieve hip and knee discomfort and to strengthen the muscles surrounding these joints.

Dr. Allen Wilkins will offer valuable insights and information to help you understand when it’s time for surgery, how long you can postpone it, whether you have options other than surgery, and how yoga can help.

 In this program, you:

•    Improve your posture & gait

•    Discover ways to build back muscle strength & joint mobility pre and post-op.

Return home with tools and practices to postpone surgery as long as possible, prepare your body for replacement surgery, and ways to aid in the healing process. This workshop is recognized by the International Association of Yoga Therapists and by Yoga Alliance. It gives yoga therapists and yoga teachers 8-hours of continuing education credits.

Come to a Weekend Workshop, “Fine Tune Your Yoga For Osteoporosis Practice” from Saturday, October 19th - to Sunday, October 20th in Rhinebeck, New York. Our focus is on learning yoga poses that can improve your balance, stability and bone density in a safe way. Our goal is to send you home with a personal Osteoporosis practice that best suits you.

The workshop will take place from 10 - 4 pm on Saturday, October 19th and 10 - 12 noon on Sunday, October 20th.  The cost is $300 per person; this includes Saturday lunch and continental breakfast on Sunday. If you care to stay until 1:00 pm on Sunday you are invited to join us for a fun, and relaxing hour of warm water yoga.

Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training Program 

making yoga accessible to people with limited mobility

Schaff Yoga Therapy’s Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training provides yoga instructors with a solid foundation to adapt classic yoga postures for students who are limited in movement because of age, illness, disability, or injury.  We use chairs, the wall, straps, blankets, blocks, and gentle assists. This program is recognized by the national Arthritis Foundation as a treatment modality.

This course prepares you to:

  • Understand basic anatomy and physiology as it relates to specific medical conditions.
  • Modify classic yoga postures for people with physical impairments, ranging from neurological conditions (such as Parkinson’s and strokes) to arthritis, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis and other back conditions.
  • Use breathing exercises and meditations to deepen your students’ experience.
  • Structure classes so that students of any age, shape, size, ability, or disability may be able to participate and enjoy the yoga experience safely and comfortably.

Goals: At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Guide people living with physical limitations confidently and compassionately through a yoga experience that is both safe and satisfying.
  • Be prepared to teach yoga in a variety of settings including independent and assisted-living facilities, nursing homes and hospitals.

This training program is appropriate for yoga teachers, physical and occupational therapists, nurses, and physicians, and for those interested in deepening their own personal practice. CEUs are available for nurses.  Upon completion, certification is available for experienced 200+ certified yoga teachers. 

Our next Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training Program will take place at Kripalu Center For Yoga & Health in August, from the 5th to the 10th. Space is limited to 24 participants. You will be able to sign up for this training program on Kripalu's website within the next month or two.

A Day Of Yoga For Arthritis, Joint Pain & Limited Mobility

Yoga for Arthritis & Osteoporosis

Building A Personal Yoga For Osteoporosis Practice Phase II

Spend a weekend with us in Rhinebeck, New York building your bone density, strength and balance.  Our focus will be on wrists, arms and hips along with learning more advanced standing poses to improve your balance and bone density in a safe way. Our goal is to send you home with a more advanced and nuanced personal “Yoga For Osteoporosis” practice that best suits you.

In this workshop we review the 12 poses in Dr. Fishman’s “Yoga for Osteoporosis” study, and we teach you a second group of bone-building poses to add to your practice. You will learn new poses to improve your balance, and to stress the bones in your spine, hips, wrists and arms.

The size of this workshop is limited to 24 participants, so we ask that you sign up early if you wish to participate.  This 11-hour workshop takes place from 9 am - 5 pm on Saturday, June 9th and from 9 am - noon on Sunday, June 10th. Lunch on Saturday, June 9th and a light, continental breakfast on Sunday, June 10th will be provided.

Warm Water Yoga Teacher Training Certification

Schaff Yoga Therapy’s 40-hour Warm Water Yoga Training Program is registered with International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) and recognized by the Arthritis Foundation as a recommended therapeutic modality.  It takes place in Rhinebeck, New York from November 10 th – November 16 th . This is the only Warm Water Yoga Teacher Training Program we are offering this year.

Led by IAYT Certified Yoga Therapist Terry Roth Schaff, this training program will teach you how to make yoga accessible to people with physical and neurological conditions. It is designed to help improve balance, range of motion, coordination and mobility while cultivating a peaceful state of mind. Yoga for Osteoporosis - Building a Personal Practice - July 29th 2017

Come to a One-Day Workshop of “Yoga For Osteoporosis – Building A Personal Practice” on Saturday July 29th in Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island.  Our focus will be on building up wrist strength and more complex standing poses to improve your balance and bone density in a safe way. Our goal is to send you home with a more advanced and nuanced personal “Yoga For Osteoporosis” practice that best suits you.

The workshop will take place from 10 am – 5 pm on Saturday, July 29th.  The cost is $200 per person.  

In this workshop we review the 12 poses in Dr. Fishman’s “Yoga for Osteoporosis” study, and we will teach you a second group of bone-building poses to add into your practice. You will learn new poses to improve your balance, and to stress the bones in your spine, hips, wrists and arms.

The size of this workshop is limited so we ask that you sign up early if you want to participate. You will be officially enrolled upon receipt of your payment. You can pay for this workshop by check or by credit card via PayPal.  If you have to cancel your reservation we will give you a credit towards a future Schaff Yoga Therapy workshop or private yoga therapy session in person or on Skype.

Yoga For Osteoporosis Phase II - A Weekend Workshop

Come to a weekend of “Yoga For Osteoporosis Phase II” on Saturday April 29th and Sunday, April 30th in Rhinebeck, NY.  Our focus will be on building up wrist strength and more complex standing poses to improve your balance and bone density in a safe way. Our goal is to send you home with a more advanced and nuanced personal “Yoga For Osteoporosis” practice that best suits you.

The workshop will take place from 10 am – 5 pm on Saturday, April 29th (with a one hour lunch break from 12 noon – 1 pm), and from 9 am – 12 noon on Sunday, April 30th.  It includes lunch on Saturday, and coffee, tea and Danish on Sunday morning.  The cost is $300 per person.  Joining us in the classroom as assistant teachers will be Karen Abramson and Sharon Hong.

In this nine-hour workshop we review the 12 poses in Dr. Fishman’s “Yoga for Osteoporosis” study to make sure that you are doing them to the best of your ability, and we will teach you a second group of bone-building poses to add into your practice. You will learn new poses to improve your balance, stress the bones in your spine, hips, wrists and arms.

As our gift to you, at the end of the workshop we invite you to spend an hour with us practicing yoga in a Warm Water Pool.  The water is around 90 degrees, and the pool is 4 feet deep. Knowing how to swim is not a prerequisite. Participation is completely voluntary but we would be delighted to send you home in the relaxed state that this will induce.
